Woodpecker alternative: cold outreach sequences that branch

By Cryptool|September 7, 2026|Product

Woodpecker has been doing cold email properly for longer than most of the category has existed, and it is worth saying plainly that Reach's campaign engine was modelled on it. The conditions, the delivery settings, the queue, the stop-on-reply behaviour: that shape is Woodpecker's, and it is the right shape. This comparison is therefore less about what is wrong with Woodpecker and more about what a free tool built on the same model adds.

What Woodpecker does well

It is a mature, focused product with unusually good deliverability instincts and support that people actually praise. Condition-based follow-ups, if-campaigns, agency features for managing clients, and a long track record of not getting its users' domains burned. If you want a specialist that has been refining one thing for years, it is a strong answer.

What Reach adds on the same model

Wait-steps, not just skips. A conditional step in most sequencers either fires or is skipped when its condition is not met. In Reach you can tick "wait for it": the enrollment parks on that step and is re-checked every half hour until the condition flips or a timeout you set elapses, and on timeout it either skips the step or sends anyway, your choice. That is the difference between "only send if they have already opened" and "hold this until they open, but not forever". Parked prospects show a waiting chip and a counter in the stats.

Verification with no credits. Syntax, MX and an SMTP recipient probe run over your whole list continuously, catch-all domains are detected and flagged unconfirmed rather than passed as good, and the dispatcher refuses to send to any address that has never been checked. No external service, no API key, no metering.

AI agents you can rewrite. Research on a prospect producing a brief, an opening angle and a fit score. A call debrief that turns a pasted transcript into a summary, the objections raised, an updated stage and a dated follow-up task. A warm intro mapper that shows who in your network is at the prospect's firm. A sourcer that proposes targets from your ICP. Every one of them is an editable prompt.

Inbound as well as outbound. Public lead forms, Meta and Google lead ads, and WhatsApp or SMS feed the same pipeline, with a qualification agent scoring them against criteria you write and booking pages that let a qualified lead put itself in a real calendar.

It is free with a Cryptool account, with your own mailboxes and no per-seat charge.

Where Woodpecker is still ahead

Track record and support, both of which are earned rather than built. Agency and client management features are more developed. And Woodpecker is a company whose only job is this, whereas Reach is one app among several in an account. If cold email is your entire business, that focus is worth paying for.

Common questions

What exactly is a wait-step?

A conditional step you can park on instead of skipping. The enrollment waits, re-checked roughly every thirty minutes, until the condition is met or your timeout elapses, at which point it either skips the step or sends anyway depending on how you set it.

How many steps and variants can a sequence have?

Up to sixteen steps, mixing email, LinkedIn, call, SMS and manual tasks, with up to five A/B versions per step. The queue round-robins versions by send count and the stats flag the winner on reply rate, with open rate as the tiebreak.

Does stop-on-reply work without me marking replies manually?

Yes, if you add IMAP details to the mailbox. Inbound mail is matched to the prospect, logged in the conversation, and the enrollment is marked replied automatically.

Is Reach only for fundraising?

No. Fundraising is one preset. The engine reads the narrative, ICP, custom fields and prompts from the project record, so sales, recruiting or partnership outreach work the same way.

Where do I start?

Open Reach, pick a preset, import your list and build a sequence.
